Making Sense of Life's Inequities

I was recently stopped at a traffic light when a sight gave me pause - a young girl running to fill plastic cans with water from a tanker truck. It dawned on me that she likely lived in poverty under a nearby flyover.

My mind immediately questioned - why some people are born into such hardship while others have easier lives. Is it past karma, destiny, or randomness?

We don't choose the circumstances we're born into. So, what explains the dramatic disparities in people's lives?

Some believe our station is karmic retribution from past lives. Others view it as divinely preordained fate. More pragmatically, we could attribute life's inequities to simple randomness.

Ultimately, we may never fully understand the origins of our situation. But rather than fall into the trap of victimhood, we must take responsibility for making the best of what we're given.

Blaming karma, kismet, or chance won't improve anything. But acceptance of what is, paired with action, can lead to growth.

We may not be able to control life's inherent unfairness. But we can control our responses, choices, and contributions going forward.

My philosophy is to focus less on untangling the mystery of why and more on how I can add value now. If life is random, then the power to build something positive rests entirely in our hands.

We alone get to write our next chapter, irrespective of how the previous ones unfolded. By infusing our words and deeds with wisdom and compassion, we redeem our destinies.

So, while the origins of life's disparities remain elusive, our path forward is clear - to take responsibility for our actions and uplift each other. In that conscious choice resides the deepest freedom life offers.
